You already have two excellent answers but let me add my comments. Travel to foreign countries typically requires some amount of experience and expertise in order to obtain a business Visa and/or work permit. That is necessary for many countries but not all. The reason being that you are essentially competing with National employees from the country you are traveling to for business. Therefore, be prepared to take the time to develop your expertise in some particular field of Engineering so that you quality for international travel.

Most all types of Engineers with experience can travel internationally and especially if they work for major companies with international operations. Large construction firms employ chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, etc. Engineers to design plants and facilities in the USA and then may send a few of those Engineers to help oversee the construction in an international location. Likewise, they may have some support groups located internationally for several years at at time.

Oil & gas companies do the same thing with petroleum, mechanical, chemical engineers, etc. China has lots of developing oil & gas fields; however, many of those are completely run from China's own Government run oil & gas companies. Only for a few of the more challenging fields have the Chinese partnered with outside oil & gas companies.

Do some research on your own and see what types of Engineering you might be interested in as a career. Doing something you enjoy should be your first priority. Pick a company which current opportunities internationally or very good international growth prospects.

I'm a Petroleum Engineering and have traveled all over the world during my career both working on projects overseas and providing techical training classes.
References :
31 years of Petrleum Engineeing

any field can travel, but typically civil engineers would be less prone to international work, because much of their work is related to local codes and practices. All others are just as likely to travel as anyone. It is more job or project specific, and may be somewhat up to you. that doesn't mean that you will be selected because you want to, but if your performance and personality, along with willingness, make sense for you to travel. I have traveled extensively primarily as a result of solid performance record, then being available, and lastly because I speak 3 languages and read another 3. Obviously, you'd want to work for a large multi-national company to increase the likelihood.
References :
It isn't the engineering discipline that determines where you work but rather the company. You should concentrate on what is the best discipline for you. That is, one where you are capable and enjoy the work.
